ASSISTANT PARK RANGER – Southern Region Multiple Locations (seasonal)

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: Class Code 9209 - Range 08; Pay: $12.16/hour; 40 hours weekly.  This is maintenance and personal services work in providing services to park users at a state park or day use area. Work may also include directing and overseeing the activities of a small crew of maintenance and operations personnel. Work is performed under general supervision.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge and/or experience in park maintenance and operations or equivalent. Valid Class C Maine motor vehicle operator’s license prior to completing permanent status.

Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated customer service and verbal communication skills while interacting with the public.

The following general information pertains to seasonal employment at Maine State Parks:

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older (Lifeguards must be 16 or older)
  • Applicants must be U.S. Citizens or have legal authority to work in the U.S.
  • Housing is required in the Penobscot River Corridor and the Allagash Wilderness Waterway.
  • In general, housing is not available at the other parks.
  • Most positions are scheduled to work 40 hours each week, with weekends and some holidays required.
  • Parks seasonal positions are required to wear uniforms which are provided by the agency.

Job offer to a new hire is conditional upon verification of credentials, criminal record, and driver’s license check if applicable.  Three references must be made available at the interview to include at least one work-related reference.   Anyone meeting the minimum qualifications of the position may apply.

BENEFITS: 
The bi-weekly dollar values of some State-paid benefits for full-time employees include: $14.60 for dental insurance; 14.11% of employee’s pay towards retirement; and, depending on the employee’s annual pay, at least 85% ($400.34) of health insurance premiums (more information is available here). Participation in the Health Premium Credit Program can decrease the employee’s cost of health insurance by 5%.
