Position Description

This is an Equipment Operator position at the Southern Maine Veterans’ Cemetery (SMVC) in Springvale.   This is a position that prepares gravesites for burial and maintains the grounds of the cemetery.

Typical Duties

  • Operates a variety of grounds maintenance equipment such as a riding mower, dump truck and tractor.
  • Operates light and medium duty trucks in order to haul freight, gravel, snow, and other material from one location to another or to perform tasks such as plowing snow.
  • Fills fuel tanks, adds lubricating oils and completes various other tasks in order to maintain equipment in good order.
  • Repairs or assists mechanic in repairing assigned equipment in order to restore it to service as quickly as possible.
  • Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and use of assigned heavy motor equipment and attached devices.
  • Knowledge of state laws pertaining to the operation of motor vehicles upon the highway.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards involved and safety precautions necessary in the operation of assigned heavy motor driven equipment.
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance and repair on assigned equipment.
  • Ability to supervise a small crew in maintenance and operational activities.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work long hours operating heavy equipment in adverse weather conditions.

Minimum Requirements:

Possession of the above knowledges and abilities.
