This job family is distinguished by its role in processing financial information. This is complex office and administrative accounting support services work requiring a solid knowledge in applying bookkeeping principles to maintain routine, standardized accounting and financial records. Responsibilities require independent judgment in prioritizing assignments and selecting the most appropriate course of action within established operating procedures.

The primary purpose of this position is to provide customer service related to Unemployment Benefits overpaid to claimants, as well as to process and reconcile repayments made by claimants to the UI Trust Fund. The position also assists with preliminary investigations of potentially fraudulent and non-fraudulent overpayments. Assists Collections Representatives by providing general information related to collections. Interacts with the Bureau’s primary financial partner to resolve financial transactions to claimants.

This position will be located in Augusta and the work schedule will be 8AM-5PM.

JOB DUTIES:

As an Accounting Technician, you will be performing a variety of clerical and administrative support duties including typing, filing, making copies, answering telephones and other general clerical duties as needed. These duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Communicating with financial and program staff regarding payments, reports, etc.
  • Processing checks and credit card payments.
  • Answering incoming phone calls for Collections staff;
  • Processing incoming and outgoing mail;
  • Filing of paperwork and documents;
  • Faxing, scanning and indexing documents;
  • Ability to effectively resolve problems.
  • Ability to determine facts, detect errors and irregularities, and take appropriate action in accordance with established procedures.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in appraising situations and making decisions/recommendations.
  • Other miscellaneous administrative duties as assigned.
  • Assist with preliminary investigation of potential fraudulent and non-fraudulent overpayments.
  • Reconcile and track daily, weekly, and monthly incoming repayments versus system generated reports.
  • Document information gathered from claimants in the pertinent computer system in order to provide accurate and current information data regarding the claimant’s unemployment claim.
  • Interact with the Bureau’s primary financial institution (vendor) to resolve financial transactions to claimants.

  • Knowledge of basis accounting theories, principles, methods, practices, and terminology
  • Knowledge of governmental accounting standards and systems
  • Knowledge of computerized accounting systems
  • Knowledge of standardized desktop technology and products
  • Ability to apply accounting principles in locating and correcting accounting errors
  • Ability to apply accepted accounting principles to income statements and balance sheets
  • Ability to verify fiscal source documents and application of fees, refunds, collections and discounts
  • Ability to prepare narrative and statistical reports and financial statements, projections, and schedules, and analyze and interpret information from reports
  • Ability to review fiscal transactions for conformity with applicable laws, rules, policies, and procedures
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to write clearly and effectively
  • Ability to recommend improvements in accounting controls, financial review trails, and business practices
  • Ability to accurately collect, count, record and/or deposit monies

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • An Associates Degree from an accredited educational institution in Accounting

-OR-

  • any Bachelors Degree from an accredited educational institution that includes 12 semester hours in accounting coursework

-OR-

  • 3 years of practical work experience providing complex technical support to professional accounting staff. 

Accounting coursework must include successful completion of Principles of Accounting I & II plus two other accounting-related courses.  Experience must demonstrate comprehension and application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) guidelines.

In addition, preference will be given to those with training, education or experience in office and administrative support work that demonstrates:

  • Competency in applying a solid knowledge of modern office practices to perform complex, varied office support tasks.
  • The ability to use independent decision making on: processing information, following appropriate processes, and taking action in accordance with standard procedures.
  • Experience in providing quality customer service by phone to claimants through a phone queue.
