Brief Job Description:  This position serves as the Endangered and Threatened Species and Species of Special Concern (ETSC) Biologist within MDIFW’s Bureau of Resource Management that will provide policy and planning guidance to the Bureau's effort to conserve and recover ETSC species. This position will provide policy and planning guidance to formulate regulatory proposals, develop grant and research proposals, set budgets, and provide technical assistance on biological and statistical inquiries. The position will administer contracts, approve final reports, make presentations to various groups, interact with the media, and report to the Commissioner's Advisory Council.  This position will help coordinate and plan ETSC species’ recovery efforts with MDIFW staff, other state and federal agencies, and private non-governmental organizations and landowners and will be required to have working knowledge of State and Federal laws regarding these efforts.


A Bachelors Degree in Biology, Wildlife Management, or related field -AND- three (3) years experience in laboratory or field research of fish and wildlife including experience in a supervisory capacity. Directly related work experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.

  1. Summarize your training and experience with Endangered and Threatened species or species of conservation concern with regards to biology and policy.


  1. Describe your experience collaborating with state and federal agencies, universities, conservation NGOs, and the public to conserve and recover rare and endangered species.


  1. Describe your written and oral communication skills with both lay and technical audiences.


  1. Compare and contrast Maine and Federal ESA policies; offer one or more changes to Maine’s ESA that might improve the Act’s efficacy at conserving/recovering listed species.


  1. Describe your experience in developing successful grant proposals, administering them (budgeting, supervising, etc.), and delivering final products in a timely manner.


  1. Describe your training and experience with the federal Endangered Species Act and the National Environmental Policy Act.
  2. Describe your experience and knowledge regarding ESA Section 7 consultations.

Level 1:  100% State Contribution = $470.99 biweekly (employee pays nothing)
Level 2:  95% State Contribution = $447.44 biweekly (Employee pays: 5%)

Level 3:  90% State Contribution = $423.89 biweekly (Employee pays: 10%)
Level 4:  85% State Contribution = $400.34 biweekly (Employee pays: 15%)
