ALLAGASH WILDERNESS WATERWAY

Position:   Allagash Assistant Park Ranger

Season:    26 weeks (approximately 4/26/20 – 10/24/15)

Hours:      Special Schedule based on 96 hours in a two-week period

Location:  Housing is provided as a condition of employment

 

Brief Job Description:  This is maintenance and personal services work in a remote recreational environment at Churchill Dam in the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. Typical duties include patrolling and cleaning sites, collecting fees, repairing facilities as needed, monitoring public use, responding to incidents, and maintaining equipment and records. A major portion of this positions time is spent operating the portage service around Chase Rapids. The person in this position will be trained and certified in Wilderness First Aid, chain saw operation, and boat operation as a requirement of this position. 

The person in this position must be able to live and work independently in remote conditions and must be able to safely and efficiently operate a range of equipment including vehicles, motorboats, radio systems, canoes with and without motors, chainsaws, and other power and hand tools.

Minimum Qualifications:  Knowledge and/or experience in park maintenance and operations or equivalent.  Valid Class C Maine motor vehicle operator’s license and must be able to meet the required training and certification requirements within a timeframe determined by the supervisor based on training opportunities.

Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated customer service and verbal communication skills while interacting with the public.

Value of State’s share of Employee’s Retirement: 14.11% of pay

Value of State-paid Dental Insurance:  $14.60 biweekly

Value of State-paid Health Insurance*:

Level 1:  100% State Contribution = $470.99 biweekly (employee pays nothing)
Level 2:  95% State Contribution = $447.44 biweekly (Employee pays: 5%)

Level 3:  90% State Contribution = $423.89 biweekly (Employee pays: 10%)
Level 4:  85% State Contribution = $400.34 biweekly (Employee pays: 15%)
*The level of actual value of state paid Health Insurance will be based on employee’s wage rate and status with regard to the health credit premium program.
