The Office of the Attorney General is seeking a highly motivated individual to fill a full-time (40 hours/week) Paralegal position located in our Portland Office. This individual will provide in-office support for heavy litigation caseloads of Assistant Attorneys General in the Child Support and Child Protection Divisions.  The ideal candidate must be enthusiastic about a career in family law and child welfare, self- directed, efficient, independent, highly organized, accurate and a great writer. The candidate must have strong interpersonal skills for working with attorneys and staff at all levels, and for communicating professionally with agency client representatives, the public, co-workers and supervisors. Strong work ethic is imperative.

   

Responsibilities and duties include but are not limited to:

 

  • Drafting pleadings, motions, orders and memoranda of law.
  • Tracking large caseloads and maintaining calendars for court appearances and deadlines.
  • Preparing responsive pleadings to complaints and motions.
  • Preparing witness subpoenas; arranging for service of process.
  • Reviewing, analyzing and responding to child support referrals from DHHS.
  • Reviewing and analyzing child protection petitions filed by DHHS; collecting supporting documentation.
  • Assisting with formal responses to discovery requests.
  • Summarizing trial transcripts for cases under appeal.
  • Preparing appendices for appeals in the Law Court.
  • Providing litigation support to busy trial attorneys with legal research and file
  • Providing backup support to office manager, when necessary.
  • Applying Maine law including Family Law, Child Protection Law, Maine Rules of Civil Procedure and Family Division
  • Any and all other responsibilities assigned by the Division Chiefs and the Office Manager

MINIMUM QUALIFICATONS

Bachelor’s Degree, paralegal certification, and/or at least three (3) years of experience as a paralegal. Minimum qualifications may be met by an acceptable equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite products is essential.

 

Preference will be given to candidates with Westlaw and Lexis experience.

Value of the State of Maine share of Employee Health and Dental contributions for new employee based on the status of Employee Only and annual salary.

Dental: $13.13 biweekly

Level 1:  100% State Contribution (employee pays nothing):   $444.68 biweekly

Level 2:  95% State Contribution (employee pays 5%):             $422.45 biweekly

Level 3:  90% State Contribution (employee pays 10%):           $400.21 biweekly

Level 4:  85% State Contribution (employee pays 15%):           $377.98 biweekly

 

Value of the State of Maine share of Employee Retirement contributions for new employees (Employee Only):  15.37% of pay for bargaining unit members.

 

Other fringe benefits are available and may require employee cost contributions.
