JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Secretary of State, Bureau of Motor Vehicles is seeking candidates for the position of Customer Representative Special License (formerly known as Driver License Examiner I) for our Portland, Maine area. This work is in administering examinations to applicants for Class A, B, C, motorcycle, bus, and school bus driver licenses. Employee administers road skill tests, written/oral tests, vision screening, and special examinations to physically challenged and/or adverse driving applicants.  Normal work hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

REPRESENTATIVE TASKS:

  • Administers and scores road skill tests for Class A, B, and C vehicles, motorcycles, buses, and school buses.

  • Administers and scores written and oral tests of traffic laws, explaining test results if necessary.

  • Administers vision screening.

  • Investigates adverse reports of an individual’s ability to drive, and administers driving skills tests.

  • Speaks to driver education classes and other groups.

  • Cleans, services, re-stocks, and maintains all issued materials (e.g., uniforms, testing equipment, forms and supply kits, vehicles).

  • Records and submits daily, weekly, and monthly activity reports.

  • May operate digital photo licensing equipment.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

In order to qualify, you must have two (2) years’ experience affording public contact, a knowledge of Maine Motor Vehicle laws and regulations, and a high school diploma or equivalent.  You must attach with the application proof of a High School Diploma or equivalent certificate.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Driver’s License (you must show proof of license before hire) and have no extensive motor vehicle violations.
  • Live or be willing to move within 35 miles of the assigned office.
  • Ability to successfully complete all testing requirements to obtain a commercial driver’s license.
  • Successfully pass a National Criminal Background check, including fingerprinting.
  • Regional travel is required.

Value of State-paid Dental Insurance:  $13.13 biweekly

Value of State-paid Health Insurance*:

Level 1:  100% State Contribution = $444.68 biweekly (employee pays nothing)
Level 2:  95% State Contribution = $422.45 biweekly (Employee pays: 5%)
Level 3:  90% State Contribution = $400.21 biweekly (Employee pays: 10%)
Level 4:  85% State Contribution = $377.96 biweekly (Employee pays: 15%)
*The level of actual value of state paid Health Insurance will be based on employee’s wage rate and status with regard to the health credit premium program as of July 1, 2018.
