The mission for the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC), within which this position is located, is to develop and deliver services to preserve, protect, and promote the health and well-being of the citizens of Maine. This position is located in Augusta.

Job duties:

As a Laboratory Technician II in the microbiology department of the HETL, you will be part of a team that is responsible for testing animals for the rabies virus as well as performing support work for the microbiology section as a whole.  This position requires self-motivation, strong organizational skills and attention to detail.  You will be trained to safely handle various body fluids including but not limited to: sputum, bronchial lavages and washes, blood, cerebral spinal fluid, and tissue samples. 

 You will also:

  • Work in a BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratory setting;
  • Conduct necropsies on potentially rabid animals of various sizes, necessitating moving and    

lifting in excess of 50 pounds;

  • Use immunohistochemistry for the diagnosis of rabies;
  • Accession clinical samples;
  • Autoclave biological waste and media; 
  • Prepare media for diagnostic use;
  • Wash and sterilize glassware.

 

Preferred candidates will be vaccinated against rabies, and have: 

  • Experience working both independently and within a team;
  • Experience using sterile techniques;
  • Dissection experience;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Exceptional time management skills;
  • Background knowledge of quality control and quality assurance.; and
  • Ability to receive a pre exposure vaccination for rabies.
  • Experience using a Laboratory Information Management System

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 (Entry level knowledges, skills, and/or abilities may be acquired through, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO the following coursework/training and/or experience).

A four (4) year combination of education, training, and experience which demonstrates a knowledge of medical or environmental technology and/or analytical chemistry and laboratory equipment, testing, and techniques.

 

The background of well-qualified candidates should demonstrate the following competencies:

 

  1. Prior experience performing dissections with experience performing dissections of mammals preferred;
  2. Prior experience preparing and staining specimen slides;
  3. Knowledge of Laboratory quality control and assurance processes;
  4. Prior experience entering data into a Laboratory Information Management System.
