BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: Job Code 9202; Range 10; Pay: $15.44/hour; 40 hours weekly:   This is protective services work in directing the activities of lifeguards responsible for enforcing beach rules and regulations and protecting the safety of visitors to state swimming areas.  Work includes arranging work schedules, and instructing and training lifeguards.  Work is performed under general supervision and in accordance with park rules and regulations.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: At least seventeen (17) years of age and have successfully completed the Lifeguard Competency Test within the last year.  These must be met by all employees prior to attaining permanent status in this class: Possession of a current/valid Lifeguard Certification, current/valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification, and current/valid First Aid Certification; and successful completion of the Lifeguard Academy.

The following general information pertains to seasonal employment at Maine State Parks:

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older (Lifeguards must be 16 or older)
  • Applicants must be U.S. Citizens or have legal authority to work in the U.S.
  • In general, housing is not available.
  • Most positions are scheduled to work 40 hours each week, with weekends and some holidays required.
  • Parks seasonal positions are required to wear uniforms which are provided by the agency.


Since many of our parks are seasonal, park staff may not be available to take your call during the early spring months. If you are unable to reach the park manager at a park, please contact the Southern Region Office at 207-624-6080.  


Job offer to a new hire is conditional upon verification of credentials, criminal record, and driver’s license check if applicable.  Three references must be made available at the interview to include at least one work-related reference.   Anyone meeting the minimum qualifications of the position may apply.



Value of State’s share of Employee’s Retirement: 15.37% of pay, Employee Pays: 7.65% of pay, Value of State-paid Dental Insurance:  $13.13 biweekly

Value of State-paid Health Insurance*:
Level 1: 100% State Contribution = $444.68 biweekly (employee pays nothing)
Level 2: 95% State Contribution = $422.45 biweekly (Employee pays: 5%)
Level 3: 90% State Contribution = $400.21 biweekly (Employee pays: 10%)
Level 4: 85% State Contribution = $377.98 biweekly (Employee pays: 15%)
*Active State employees will remain at their current level, based on wages and status with regard to the health credit premium program
