The Office of the State Controller, Risk Management Division has (1) one current opening located in Augusta, Maine.


This position requires direct contact with members of the public and other agencies in person and by phone.  This position is involved in the timely and accurate processing of property and casualty insurance related matters.  The position performs routine, varied office support tasks often requiring the operation of technical office equipment as well as knowledge of Microsoft and similar computer applications.  This position engages in loss prevention activities which include teaching defensive driving classes, analyzing and grading motor vehicle driving records. Responsibilities will require making some independent judgements and prioritizing assignments.


  • Draft and compose standard insurance related business emails, letters, and memo’s.
    • Follow complex office procedures detailed in the division’s reference/procedures manuals.
    •             Evaluate and match information from varied sources to claim and insurance policy files.
    •             Enter, update, and maintain computerized data used by the division.
    •             Monitor and ensure the accuracy of data input and the resulting insurance related data.
    •             Process and maintain the division’s records per the State’s Archival schedules.
    •             Locate, retrieve, and assess the accuracy of motor vehicle driving records.
    •             Note and report computer program anomalies involving the division’s database and complex spreadsheets.
    •             Receive insurance claim information, probe for information needed by the division.
    •             Receive and respond to complaints, requests, and questions and redirect when appropriate.
    •             Monitor, requisition, and maintain the inventory of office and other supplies used within the division.
    •             Confer with supervisor and other professional staff on assignments relative to office procedures.
    •             Perform secretarial duties taking messages/requests by phone or in-person, review documents arriving by mail,

                fax or email, and respond accordingly within authority granted.
•             Schedule employees for defensive driver training, locate and reserve facilities, prepare training materials.
•             Reconciles funds and performs calculations for reports. 



Training, education, or experience in office and administrative support work that demonstrates 1) competency in applying a solid knowledge of modern office practices to perform complex, varied office support tasks, and 2) the ability to use independent decision-making on the appropriate processes to follow, information to process, and actions to take in accordance with standard procedures.  All positions in this classification assume the qualifications of: Office Assistant I, Office Assistant II, and Office Associate I.  Must have a valid driver’s license. *Preference will be given to candidates with property and casualty insurance experience or education.
