The Maine Department of Marine Resources, seeking qualified candidates for a Marine Resource Scientist II position in the Biological Monitoring & Assessment Division.

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: The Department of Marine Resources (DMR) is seeking applicants with strong scientific and managerial skills for a Marine Resource Scientist II position in the Biological Monitoring & Assessment Division / Bureau of Marine Science located at the West Boothbay Harbor laboratory. This position is the lead biologist for the sea scallop resource for the Maine DMR. This position is responsible for the coordination, implementation, and participation in the Maine sea scallop survey, sampling, and assessment program. This includes participation and collaboration in scientific research and fisheries management at the local, state, and federal levels.  This position is an active member of the New England Fisheries Management Council’s Scallop Plan Development Team (PDT).

This position primarily serves as the lead scientist for the surveying, sampling and analysis of the inshore and offshore components of the state’s scallop resource and industry, responsible for coordinating and supervising seasonal fishery independent dredge surveys, in-season surveys, at-sea and port-sampling of the scallop catch and maintaining the scallop data sampling database.  This position oversees data entry compilation, writes annual summary statistics/reports for publication, writes the scallop component of semi-annual and annual grant reports, and provides collected and analyzed information to fishery managers and technical committees to inform management decisions.  This position may be the lead for grant writing for collaborative project proposals internally and with outside researchers. The position may work on research for other managed species. The position will supervise staff involved in the surveys and sampling.

Applicants should demonstrate experience with long term monitoring survey design and analysis; knowledge of stock assessments and fisheries statistics; and, familiarity with relational database structure and implementation. Experience with the commercial scallop industry, ArcGIS, and R is preferred.  The position requires excellent communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelors Degree in a scientific, technical, or engineering field or equivalent in directly related work experience and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in the field of marine resource research and/or management or related field.  Preference will be given to previous experience in a supervisory capacity. Equivalent experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Level 1:  100% State Contribution = $461.75 biweekly (employee pays nothing)
Level 2:  95% State Contribution = $438.66 biweekly (Employee pays: 5%)

Level 3:  90% State Contribution = $415.58 biweekly (Employee pays: 10%)
Level 4:  85% State Contribution = $392.49 biweekly (Employee pays: 15%)
