DESCRIPTION:

The Maine Department of Professional and Financial Regulation Bureau of Insurance seeks an Insurance Company Examiner.  

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Participate in the planning and performance of financial examinations including, but not limited to, risk identification and assessment, internal control assessment and testing, claim testing, premium testing, investment testing, compliance testing, expense evaluation and analytics and production of accurate and clear written examination findings and recommendations. 

Qualified applicants must have knowledge of:

  • Accounting and auditing principles and practices
  • Business law, economics, and finance
  • Knowledge of statistical sampling methodology 

Qualified applicants must have the ability to:

  • Analyze accounts, records and financial statements
  • Communicate effectively
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Work in a team environment  

For full job performance, Examiners will be expected to obtain:

  • Knowledge of insurance company practices
  • Knowledge of state laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to insurance practices 

A significant amount of this work will be conducted in the greater Portland, Maine area. Extensive in-state travel and occasional out-of-state travel required.

Employment time qualifies as experience toward CPA requirements on an hour for hour basis. 

QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor’s degree in accounting or closely related field –OR- an acceptable four (4) year equivalent combination of education, training and experience.  

Preference may be given to those applicants holding the following certifications; CFE, AFE, CPA, CISA or AES.  Employment time qualifies as experience toward CPA requirements on an hour for hour basis. This position is eligible for a stipend of up to 21% of the hourly rate of pay for employees who maintain either the CPA and/or the CFE designation.
