CURRENT VACANCY INFORMATION

The Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland, Maine is accepting applications for Juvenile Program Workers.  Applications may be kept on file for a period of six months and may be used to fill current and future vacancies.

JOB DESCRIPTION
This is paraprofessional support work involving the interaction, care, security, treatment, and rehabilitation of juveniles committed to a correctional facility.  Responsibilities include providing direct care; modeling appropriate behavior, attitude, ethics, and morals; and implementing rehabilitative, protective, treatment and behavioral health programs and services.  Employee maintains security, coordinates and supervises residents' daily living activities, and enforces facility rules.  This classification is distinguished from traditional correctional officers in that a primary focus of this work involves the treatment, rehabilitation, and behavior modification of troubled youth.  Work is performed under general supervision.  This position requires exposure to chemical agents (OC Spray).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE JOB SUCCESSFULLY:

  • Knowledge of adolescent development and behavior.
  • Knowledge of methods of providing care, custody, and control of juvenile detainees.
  • Knowledge of counseling techniques.
  • Knowledge of modern security principles and practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to write clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to prepare reports of activities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion.
  • Ability to observe and communicate situations and behavior in detail.
  • Ability to maintain order and control juveniles, individually and in groups.
  • Ability to provide guidance and leadership to juveniles.
  • Ability to exercise self-control in a negative and hostile environment.
  • Ability to model appropriate behavior, attitude, ethics, and morals.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

High school graduation or equivalent and no criminal or extensive motor vehicle record.  Some positions, based upon option, may require background education and/or experience in an appropriate field (e.g. food preparation).

LICENSING/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS 

At time of hire:  Valid Driver’s License

 Prior to attaining Permanent Status: Maine State Driver’s License

Completion of the Basic Corrections Training Course (organized and funded by DOC upon hire – includes mandatory exposure to chemical agents)

  • Level 1:  100% State Contribution (employee pays nothing):  $461.75 biweekly
  • Level 2:  95% State Contribution (employee pays 5%):  $438.66 biweekly
  • Level 3:  90% State Contribution (employee pays 10%):  $415.58 biweekly
  • Level 4:  85% State Contribution (employee pays 15%):  $392.49 biweekly

*The level of the actual value of state paid Health Insurance will be based on the employee’s wage rate and status with regard to the health credit premium program.

Value of State’s share of Employee’s Retirement: 21.03% of pay.
