The Department of Corrections has a current vacancy for a Nurse III located within the Department’s Central Office in Augusta, Maine.  This position is open to current Maine DOC employees who wish to apply and all outside candidates.  Statewide travel is required. WORK HOURS: Monday through Friday 8:00am-4:30pm with occasional evening work

JOB DESCRIPTION The Department of Corrections is looking for a professional nurse who is a dedicated business partner ensuring that Department initiatives follow policy and delivery of care. The incumbent would hold a key leadership role providing program audits, attaining clear, concrete, timely, and measurable outcomes for the Department. As a Nurse III - Auditor, your responsibilities will include visiting state facilities for auditing purposes to observe existing practices and develop and recommend new workflow processes as necessary; may visit county jail facilities for compliance assessment; conducts electronic health care record reviews to audit health care delivery based upon departmental policy and best practice;  attending medical meetings to examine program activity and ensure Quality Assurance standards are met; monitoring corrective action plans, conducting site inspections to audit patient care, and monitoring contract performance of health care service providers.  There may be times when interviewing prisoners will be required.  


  • Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.
  • Knowledge of pharmacology.
  • Knowledge of American Correctional Association Standards
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws, rules, and regulations
  • relating to correctional facility standards.
  • Knowledge of investigation principles, practices, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of data collection and interpretation methods and techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to research, compile and analyze complex information and make logical conclusions.
  • Ability to maintain records and charts and write reports.
  • Ability to maintain a sympathetic attitude toward and harmonious relationships with mentally and physically ill patients.


A Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or related field and two (2) years’ nursing experience -OR- graduation from an accredited school of nursing and three (3) years’ experience as a professional nurse.  Experience must include one (1) year supervisory experience in the nursing field.


A license as a Registered Nurse as issued by the Maine State Board of Nursing.




Two (2) years’ experience in a correctional, detention, law enforcement, medical or institutional setting, or closely related field, which provided a knowledge of computerized management information system operations and requirements as it relates to managing client and/or patient information.
