Job Description:

The Office of the Attorney General is seeking a highly motivated individual with a strong work ethic to fill a full-time (40 hours/week) paralegal position in our Augusta Office. This individual will provide in-office support for the attorneys and another paralegal assigned to the Consumer Protection Division.

Duties include:

  • Communicating and arranging interviews with consumers;
  • Reviewing and responding to consumer inquiries;
  • Managing documents and other information obtained in the course of an investigation or discovery;
  • Researching public records and available data bases;
  • Drafting letters, pleadings, proposed orders and memoranda.
  • Tracking case data and maintaining Division attorneys’ calendars of depositions, court dates, and case deadlines;
  • Preparing and organizing deposition and trial exhibits;
  • Communicating with agency staff, court personnel, opposing attorneys and members of the public;
  • Communicating with witnesses, preparing subpoenas, and arranging for service of process;
  • Providing trial support for Division attorneys;
  • Preparing appendices for Law Court appeals;
  • Engaging in debt collection activity, including appearing in District Court, to enforce judgment or orders for the Attorney General’s Office or other state agencies;
  • Assisting the Division Chief with various administrative tasks;
  • Assisting with Division events including meetings; and
  • All other responsibilities assigned by the Division Chief.

The candidate should be highly organized and accurate, have excellent interpersonal and writing skills, and be able to work independently.  The candidate also should be proficient on the computer, and have a working familiarity with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel and Adobe Acrobat.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A Bachelor’s Degree and two (2) years of paralegal experience in a law firm, court, or legal services agency - OR - graduation from an approved, accredited paralegal program of instruction and one (1) year of paralegal experience.  Equivalent related experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.

  • Level 2:  95% State Contribution (employee pays 5%):  $438.66 biweekly

  • Level 4:  85% State Contribution (employee pays 15%):  $392.49 biweekly

*The level of the actual value of state paid Health Insurance will be based on the employee’s wage rate and status with regard to the health credit premium program.
