PURPOSE OF ANNOUNCEMENT

The Department of Education has an anticipated opening for one (1) position based in Augusta.  Statewide travel is required.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The purpose of the position is to serve as the Department of Education’s expert and primary contact for schools and the public on issues relating to Social and Emotional Learning as well as Behavioral Health and Restorative Practices. The position is responsible for ensuring the Department meets the statutory directive to provide model policies, and for providing non-regulatory guidance on these issues and interpretations of relevant state laws and rules; as well as providing technical assistance to practitioners.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED to successfully perform the work assigned:

  • Knowledge of state and federal laws, rules and regulations governing Social Emotional Learning, Behavioral Health and Restorative Practices in schools.
  • Knowledge and skills in instruction of self awareness, self management, social awareness, relationship skills, responsible decision making skills and other best practices in the areas within the person’s responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of a wide range of public and private resources and efforts relating to these responsibilities, including public and private social services agencies, within-school resources, non-profit organizations etc.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff in DOE, other state agencies and schools.
  • Ability to identify solutions to individual cases using a variety of tools and resources.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with staff at DOE and other stakeholder groups.
  • Ability to formulate and draft policies, rules and legislation relating to these issues.
  • Ability to plan and conduct technical assistance that is responsive to the needs of schools, students and parents.
  • Ability to produce reports to the Legislature and others, as may be required by law.

                                                 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

Bachelor of Arts/Science Degree in Education, Human Resource Development, Psychology, or a related field and five (5) years of experience as an education practitioner. A Masters Degree in an education related field may be substituted for two (2) years of educational experience.
