The Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Remediation and Waste Management, is seeking to fill two (2) Environmental Specialist III vacancies in Augusta.

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION:  This position conducts licensing, enforcement and compliance assistance work for hazardous waste generators, transporters, and receiving facilities to implement the federally delegated RCRA program and state hazardous waste laws and regulations. Responsibilities include reviewing applications and drafting licenses, providing regulatory and technical assistance to regulated entities, collecting samples of environmental media, conducting compliance inspections, complaint investigations, and enforcement actions, and presenting information in public settings, including at public hearings, informational meetings and legal proceedings.  The position coordinates with DEP technical staff, certified professionals and attorneys to establish and meet regulatory compliance and corrective action goals. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  A six (6) year combination of education and/or experience in environmental, biological, physical science, or engineering which includes two (2) years of environmental experience.  Qualifying education must include at least 15 credit hours of science or engineering coursework from an accredited educational institution.

Preference will be given to candidates with the following skills or experience:

  • Knowledge and experience specific to hazardous waste management;
  • Experience with compliance or enforcement of local, state, or federal regulations;
  • Experience conducting inspections of regulated entities;
  • Experience with writing and/or complying with regulatory permits; and
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Value of State’s share of Employee’s Retirement: 14.47% of pay, Employee Pays: 7.65% of pay

Value of State-paid Health Insurance**:

Level 1:  100% State Contribution = $461.75 biweekly (Employee pays: nothing)

Level 2:  95% State Contribution = $438.66 biweekly (Employee pays: 5%)

Level 3:  90% State Contribution = $415.58 biweekly (Employee pays: 10%)

Level 4:  85% State Contribution = $392.49 biweekly (Employee pays: 15%)

**The level of actual value of State-paid Health Insurance will be based on employee’s wage rate and status with regard to the health credit premium program.
