The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) provides supportive, preventive, public health and intervention services that protect the public health and assist our customers in meeting their needs. 

The mission for the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC), within which this position is located, is to develop and deliver services to preserve, protect, and promote the health and well-being of the citizens of Maine.

Job duties:

 You will serve as the Communication, Education, and Outreach Specialist for the Chronic Disease Prevention Program.  You will be developing and disseminating health education messages to the public, patients/caregivers, and health care professionals about prevention and self-management of chronic diseases as it is a vital component of the program and aims at reducing the use of emergency departments, hospitalizations and improving the health status of population.

 

You will also:

  • Assist the Program with developing the communication strategy and implementing statewide and targeted educational and publicity activities related asthma, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease prevention and self-management programs to increase chronic disease awareness among Maine citizens, as well as promoting the use of evidence based chronic disease management strategies for medical professionals.
  • Assist with developing and maintaining messages and resources such as tip-sheets, web content, infographics, brochures, posters, and videos to support chronic disease prevention efforts.
  • Collect, organize and interpret information about chronic disease burden and transform this information into products for dissemination to the partners, the public and for posting on the Maine CDC website.
  • Act as liaison to multiple partners, within and outside of Maine DHHS, to identify and implement promotion and coordination efforts.
  • Support multiple program functions including, but not limited to: website maintenance, assisting with preparation of the US CDC reports, contract materials, meeting logistics, and responding to inquiries.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 A Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Community Health Education, Health Education, or related field – OR – an acceptable equivalent four (4) year combination of education, training, and/or experience in the health education field.

 

Preferred candidates will have:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge and experience with chronic disease (asthma, obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer) prevention
  • Demonstrated skill applying best practices and standards for health communication, page layout, and information design.
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of internal and external partners
  • Computer skills, including knowledge of graphic design software
  • Knowledge of and experience with website development and maintenance
  • Ability to work with managers and staff to identify training needs and research information for training/meeting opportunities, or to provide outreach materials

Level 4:  85% State Contribution = $392.49 biweekly (Employee pays: 15%)
