The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is seeking to fill a newly created IF&W Senior Resource Biologist position to serve as a member of the Fisheries Statewide Support Team working from the Department’s main office in Augusta.

 

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION:  This nonsupervisory position engages in professional scientific work to support the statewide management and conservation of freshwater fishery resources in Maine, working closely with fisheries leadership, regional staff, as well as other agencies, organizations, and public members.  The position will share a broad-range of responsibilities with other support team members, including the facilitation and implementation of strategic planning; coordination of statewide monitoring and assessment with regional staff; assisting with the development and updating of statewide fishery dataset/databases and management plans; and facilitation of research and funding partnerships consistent with statewide planning.  This position will also focus on the management of commercial fisheries (baitfish, sucker, eel, yellow perch, and smelt).  Associated tasks will include coordination of licensing/permitting, management of harvest data, facilitating meetings with stakeholders, and coordination and assistance with the development of appropriate laws and rules to support effective management and compliance. This position provides technical support to the Department, other state and federal agencies, non-governmental organizations, and the public; represents the Department at public meetings; and routinely analyzes fishery data and prepares written reports, plans, and findings.

 

Preference will be given to those that have strong interpersonal, organizational, and written skills as well as experience directly related to freshwater fisheries management.  Desired skills include:

  • Experience sampling fish populations through a variety of field methods
  • Experience working with members of the public on freshwater fisheries issues
  • Experience entering and analyzing fisheries data in SAS/Access/Excel/ArcMap
  • Experience writing plans, technical reports and popular articles relating to fisheries

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelors Degree in Biology, Fisheries or Wildlife Management, or related field -AND- two (2) years of progressively responsible laboratory or field research and/or management experience. Equivalent experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
