The Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry, Bureau of Parks and Lands, has a vacancy for a Forest Technician in Ashland.


BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION:  This is technical services work in multiple-use forest management on state owned lands.  Responsibilities involve performing field work including determining compliance with timber harvesting standards and permit specifications, collecting forest inventory and road construction data, preparing forest stands for harvesting and improvement, performing boundary line maintenance, constructing and maintaining recreation facilities, and other duties as assigned.  In addition, the position may have responsibility for creating various computer generated maps.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Two years of training, education and/or experience in basic forest management or related field.

You must answer the Supplemental Questions below and attach to your application in order to be considered for the position.

1.      Describe your experience in the supervision and administration of a commercial timber harvest.  Specifically address contractor compliance with permit specifications including harvest and utilization standards, Best Management Practices (BMP’s), federal/state/local regulations, Forest Practices Act (FPA), and timber security.

2.      Describe your experience preparing forest stands for harvesting, such as individual tree marking, block layout and skid trail location.

3.      Describe your computer skills, including level of experience and comfort with each of the following:

a. word processing

b. map making

c. map editing

d. Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

4.      Describe your experience working alone in remote situations under adverse field conditions.

5.      Describe your experience with timber cruising, volume determination and land area determination.  Include any experience you have with smart phones and forestry apps.

Value of State’s share of Employee’s Retirement: 15.37% of pay, Employee Pays: 7.65% of pay

Level 1:  100% State Contribution = $444.68 biweekly (employee pays nothing)
Level 2:  95% State Contribution = $422.45 biweekly (Employee pays: 5%)
Level 3:  90% State Contribution = $400.21 biweekly (Employee pays: 10%)
Level 4:  85% State Contribution = $377.98 biweekly (Employee pays: 15%)
