The Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry, Maine Forest Service, has a current vacancy for a Biometrician in Augusta.


Brief Job Description: This is advanced professional scientific forest work of a managerial nature involving the coordination of data collection, synthesis, and analysis of forest resources information in Maine. The position reports to the Director of Forest Health and Monitoring but will be part of a larger team of individuals devoted to improving our knowledge base about Maine's forests.


Typical Duties:

  • Conducting and overseeing research on the present condition of Maine's forest resources.
  • Constructing growth & yield models from available forest inventory data
  • Developing growth & yield projections using Woodstock forest modeling software
  • Forecasting the effects of various harvesting scenarios, insect and disease outbreaks, wind and ice storms, and other perturbations.
  • Leading a team responsible for designing and analyzing annualized forest inventories.
  • Conducting scientific and statistical forest data analyses.
  • Interpreting forest conditions and trends.
  • Projecting statewide and area-specific (e.g. Maine Public Lands with regional breakdown) forest conditions, growth, and yield.


Minimum Qualifications Required:

Advanced education and/or experience in statistics and forest/forest biology. The individual in this position must have an advanced knowledge of statistics and statistical analysis, forest modeling software, as well as forestry and forest biology.

Value of State’s share of Employee’s Retirement: 15.37% of pay, Employee Pays: 7.65% of pay

Level 1:  100% State Contribution = $444.68 biweekly (employee pays nothing)
Level 2:  95% State Contribution = $422.45 biweekly (Employee pays: 5%)

Level 3:  90% State Contribution = $400.21 biweekly (Employee pays: 5%)
Level 4:  85% State Contribution = $377.98 biweekly (Employee pays: 5%)
