Salary based on 236 days and reflects base pay only.  Salary level dependent upon degree and experience; does not include $0.60 per hour direct care, 10% recruitment and 5% professional development stipend.(only juvenile teachers get the stipends)

CURRENT VACANCY INFORMATION

The Maine Correctional Center in Windham, Maine has a current vacancy for a Teacher.  This position is open to transfers and all outside applicants.

JOB DESCRIPTION

This is a year-round, 236 day position.  The primary purpose of this position is to teach HiSet courses and academic subjects to students incarcerated at the Maine Correctional Center. Responsibilities include testing students, developing curricula and educational plans, instructing classes, and evaluating student progress to help prepare them for educational or career pathways upon release. 

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES (Include, but are not limited to the following.)

Evaluates student academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports.

Maintains student discipline through adherence to accepted policies and regulations.

Assists students in the development of desirable work habits, attitudes, and skills.

Prepares lesson plans in accordance with curriculum.

Meets with and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.

Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students.

Creates a classroom/career area environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students.

Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals. 

REQUIREMENTS

In order to be successful in this position you will need to have knowledge and abilities in the following areas:

Knowledge of department functions, objectives, policies and programs.

Knowledge of curriculum development, classroom instruction, and educational planning.

Ability to teach English at the middle school or secondary school level along with general education courses.

Ability to assess student needs and develop/modify instruction as necessary.

Ability to work effectively as an individual and as part of a team.

Ability to work with and manage at-risk youth.

Ability to provide necessary accommodations and modifications for growth and success of all students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

A Bachelor’s Degree in Education or a related field.

LICENSING/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS (These must be met by all employees prior to obtaining permanent status in this class.)
Maine Teacher’s Certification for appropriate subject and/or grade(s) as issued by the Department of Education.

Value* of State-paid Health Insurance:

  • Level 1:  100% State Contribution (employee pays nothing):  $444.68 biweekly
  • Level 2:  95% State Contribution (employee pays 5%):  $422.45 biweekly
  • Level 3:  90% State Contribution (employee pays 10%):  $400.21 biweekly
  • Level 4:  85% State Contribution (employee pays 15%):  $377.98 biweekly

*The level of the actual value of state paid Health Insurance will be based on the employee’s wage rate and status with regard to the health credit premium program.

Value of State’s share of Employee’s Retirement: 16.9% of pay.
